Energy storage solutions for luxury yachts: combining supercapacitors and batteries
Luxury yachting is a constantly evolving sector, with a growing focus on sustainability, comfort and autonomy. Modern yachts incorporate increasingly complex electrical systems, from hybrid engines to entertainment and air conditioning systems, requiring reliable and high-performance energy storage solutions.
The role of batteries and supercapacitors
Traditional batteries, such as lithium batteries, offer long-term energy ideal for powering electric motors, on-board equipment and emergency systems. However, when instantaneous power peaks need to be managed, for example to stabilise the boat or start generators, batteries tend to degrade rapidly when used alone.
Supercapacitors, on the other hand, supply and absorb energy in milliseconds and can withstand millions of cycles without significant degradation. Integrating them into a hybrid system means optimising both the life and performance of the storage system.
How a hybrid system works
A supercap-battery hybrid system operates according to three key principles:
- Power peak management: supercapacitors provide energy during acceleration, speed changes or activation of high-consumption systems.
- Battery protection: by reducing the current peaks absorbed by the batteries, their useful life is increased, while also reducing the risk of overheating.
- Energy recovery: during braking or speed reduction, supercapacitors store energy that can be reused, improving overall efficiency.
