Supercapacitors in Electric Boats: Sustainability and Performance
The energy transition is no longer limited to the automotive or industrial sectors. The marine sector is also undergoing a profound transformation, driven by increasingly clear decarbonization goals and a growing focus on efficiency, onboard comfort, and emissions reduction. In fact, the IMO continues to push for a gradual reduction in maritime transport emissions, while new regulations have come into effect in Europe requiring the monitoring of energy used on board during voyages and in ports connected to the EU.
In this context, supercapacitors are emerging as an attractive technology for electric and hybrid vessels. Their strength lies not in replacing batteries, but in complementing them when an immediate response is needed. During acceleration, maneuvering, sudden changes in load, or energy recovery, the onboard system requires rapid and repeatable power—and this is precisely where supercapacitors excel.
In electrified marine systems, in fact, energy demand is not always constant. There are very rapid transients that place stress on the battery pack and power electronics. Incorporating a supercapacitor module into the architecture means being able to better manage these peaks, improving system stability and reducing electrochemical stress on the batteries. The result is a more balanced, more dynamic, and potentially longer-lasting energy platform.
There is also a second advantage: operational efficiency. A system that performs better during transients enables smarter management of available energy, with benefits that can be reflected in operational continuity, onboard comfort, and the overall quality of electric propulsion. This is particularly relevant for electric tenders, harbor shuttles, short-range passenger services, workboats, and, looking ahead, even for premium applications in the yacht sector.
In other words, in electric boating, the issue is not just “how much energy do I have on board,” but also “how quickly can I use it effectively.” And it is precisely in this area that supercapacitors can play a strategic role.
