Supercapacitors in electric vehicles:
the perfect boost for regenerative braking
The electric vehicle market continues to grow globally. According to the IEA, global sales of electric cars are expected to exceed 20 million units by 2025, accounting for more than a quarter of all cars sold worldwide. This expansion makes it even more important to improve the efficiency, energy management, and durability of storage systems.
In this context, regenerative braking is a critical function. Recovering energy during deceleration means increasing the vehicle’s overall efficiency and reducing some of the losses that would otherwise be dissipated. However, the amount of power generated during braking can be high and concentrated over very short periods. Batteries are not always the ideal technology for repeatedly absorbing these peaks as efficiently as possible.
This is where supercapacitors come into play. Thanks to their rapid charging and discharging capabilities, they can absorb the energy recovered during the most intense braking and return it almost immediately during subsequent acceleration or burst requests. In other words, they act as a high-power buffer within the system.
The main advantage is not only recovering energy, but doing so in a more dynamic way. In a hybrid battery-supercapacitor architecture, the battery can be relieved of the most aggressive transients, allowing it to operate under more favorable conditions. This can result in improved thermal management, reduced electrical stress, and greater overall system efficiency.
This topic is particularly relevant not only for cars but also for electric buses, commercial vehicles, industrial vehicles, and applications where frequent braking and acceleration occur. The more intense the cycles, the more a high-power solution becomes strategic.
For this reason, talking about electric vehicles today no longer means just talking about batteries. It means designing smarter energy systems, in which each technology performs the task for which it is best suited. And in rapid cycles of energy recovery and release, supercapacitors can offer a real advantage.
